DaZ – German as a second language

Our school is diverse. We believe that our school benefits from the multitude of cultures which come together in our preparatory class. It is our belief that respect, tolerance and intercultural sensitivity are prerequisites for successful integration. Besides teaching students German, our classes aim to convey the importance of equality and equity in our school and within our rules. It is important to us that these values are understood by students and their families. All children have the same rights and obligations.

Students in the process of learning German are first placed in a preparatory class and are then assigned a standard class following an initial interview.

As the language skills of the learner grow, they are gradually integrated into their standard class based on the type of subjects best suited for them. This integration typically begins with subjects such as music, physical education and art.

Evaluation and grading

Phase 1 (DaZ 1) - No marks

Students receive no marks, instead they are given written evaluations based on criteria by the supervising teacher.

During this phase, the student is taught exclusively in the DaZ classroom with other DaZ students.

Phase 2 (DaZ 2) - No marks

Similar to the first phase, the student is not given numerical marks and instead receive written evaluations.

The student is gradually integrated into certain subjects alongside their standard class, but do not receive grades in those subjects.

Phase 3 (DaZ 3) - Students receive marks

Upon reaching the third phase, the student is fully integrated into their standard class and receive full marks.

Students in phase three are graded no differently than native German students, but may be allowed to use special dictionaries upon request during certain examinations.

Native language Classes

Do you and your child speak languages other than German?

The state of Saxony provides language classes specifically for migrants with native languages other than German.

At the beginning of every school year, a survey is conducted whereby parents of students may apply for native language classes free of charge. Upon request, you will receive information regarding the location, dates and times of classes suitable for your child.

Students attending native language classes will have it noted on their report card.
